Swedish confectioner adopts paper packaging for nut-based spread
Business
Swedish confectionery producer, Printzells Confectionery AB, has launched its nut-based spread in recyclable paper cups and lids–developed in collaboration with Huhtamaki. The shift marks Printzells’ move away from traditional plastic packaging to a more sustainable, fibre-based solution.
Printzells, a family-run candy manufacturer established in 1961, sought packaging that could both handle the demanding properties of the nut-based product and meet local recycling requirements.
To address this, Huhtamaki provided a tailored solution—a 300ml paper cup with specific barrier and sealing properties designed to protect the spread while ensuring recyclability through local paper waste streams.

The collaboration underscores Huhtamaki’s approach to supporting businesses of all sizes in transitioning to sustainable packaging alternatives.
Following testing and development, the new packaging format not only suits Printzells’ nut-based spread but is also adaptable for other food products such as dairy and yogurt.
Printzells customer representative said: Huhtamaki was the first company we contacted that could deliver both the paper cup and the paper lid.
Working with Huhtamaki has been great. This was a new field for us and we got strong support and information from Huhtamaki.
We have received a really good response to this new product. Consumers today are much more informed and conscious about the environmental impact of their purchases.
By introducing paper-based cups and lids, Printzells strengthens its commitment to responsible packaging practices and enhances its environmental credentials.
