Orkla Suomi trials paper-based packaging for Panda Milk chocolate

Sustainability

Orkla Suomi has introduced a paper-based packaging alternative for its Panda Milk Chocolate bars, replacing conventional polypropylene (PP) plastic wrappers as part of a six-month pilot programme. The new packaging is now available in stores across Finland.

Developed in collaboration with UPM Specialty Papers, the new wrapper utilises UPM Asendo™ Pro 75 g/m² barrier paper, which provides grease-resistant properties suited for chocolate products. A cold seal lacquer has been applied to the sealing areas, allowing the material to be processed on Orkla Suomi's existing flowpack packaging machinery, which is typically used for plastic packaging. The solution has undergone extensive testing, including shelf-life assessments, and is certified for food safety under both BfR and FDA standards.

The initiative aligns with Orkla Suomi’s efforts to increase the use of renewable and recyclable materials in its packaging without compromising functionality. UPM sources its fibres exclusively from sustainably managed forests, ensuring responsible production practices. The packaging paper has been validated as recyclable through established fibre recycling streams in Finland and across Europe, where 83% of paper and cardboard packaging is currently recycled (Eurostat, 2021).

Traditional chocolate bar packaging often incorporates plastic or laminated materials to maintain freshness and prevent grease penetration. However, the UPM Asendo Pro paper features an integrated barrier, eliminating the need for additional plastic layers.

Arja Laitinen, Packaging Developer at Orkla Snacks, said: At Orkla Suomi, we want to make everyday life better with local brands that bring joy and make sustainable choices easier. Our products are a combination of tradition, innovation, and sustainability. A great example of our ongoing efforts to replace fossil-based materials with renewable alternatives is the new paper-based chocolate tablet packaging, developed in collaboration with UPM and printing house Walki Westpak. We will pilot this paper-based packaging with Panda Milk Chocolate in spring 2025 to gather insights and experiences from the new solution.

The pilot will evaluate the effectiveness of the new material in real-market conditions, with potential for broader implementation in the future.
