Paper based barrier packaging introduced for Prymat dried spices
Business

Mondi has worked with Polish seasoning manufacturer Prymat to develop a paper-based packaging solution designed to protect dried spices while supporting recyclability objectives.

As part of the collaboration, Prymat is moving to packaging made using Mondi’s re/cycle FunctionalBarrier Paper Ultimate. The material was selected following testing and trials to assess its suitability as an alternative to conventional multi-layer packaging structures that are typically not recyclable.

According to Mondi, assessments carried out using its internal product impact evaluation tools indicate that FunctionalBarrier Paper Ultimate has a lower carbon footprint compared with standard multi-layer plastic or aluminium-based packaging formats. The material contains at least 80% paper and incorporates a functional barrier coating intended to maintain recyclability. It has been assessed as recyclable under the latest laboratory test method developed by the CEPI.

The barrier paper is designed to provide protection against oxygen, moisture and grease, helping to preserve the aroma and flavour of dried spices. Mondi reports that the material achieves an oxygen transmission rate below 0.5 cm³/m²/day and a water vapour transmission rate below 0.5 g/m²/day.

In addition to barrier performance, the paper-based packaging supports high-quality print finishes for on-shelf presentation. The stiffness of the material also allows for a dead-fold effect, enabling the pack to remain folded after opening.

Prymat, as a leading producer of spices and food additives, has consistently sought solutions to transition from multi-layer packaging to recyclable materials. Given the very high barrier requirements and the preservation of spice quality, aroma, and freshness, this posed a significant technological challenge. Thanks to our collaboration with Mondi, we were able to develop a solution that aligns our sustainability ambitions with the highest standards of product quality.

Working with Mondi was such a valuable experience: we truly became one team working together towards a shared goal.

The packaging solution is compatible with Prymat’s existing filling equipment, allowing the transition to be implemented without changes to current machinery. The companies state that this approach supports Prymat’s sustainability objectives while maintaining operational efficiency.
