NIVEA Creme tin now contains 95% recycled aluminium
Business
Novelis and Beiersdorf have announced that the NIVEA Creme tin is now manufactured using 95% recycled aluminium, following a joint development project aimed at increasing recycled content in the packaging.
The companies worked together to adapt the aluminium alloy composition and manufacturing processes, enabling a higher proportion of recycled material to be incorporated while maintaining the tin's durability, quality and appearance.

The use of recycled aluminium also reduces the carbon footprint associated with the packaging material compared with aluminium produced from primary sources.
Aluminium can be recycled repeatedly without losing its properties. According to the companies, recycling aluminium requires approximately 5% of the energy used in primary aluminium production and can reduce associated carbon emissions by up to 95%.
The recycled material used for the NIVEA Creme tins is supplied through Novelis' European recycling network, which includes its Nachterstedt facility in Germany. The plant has an annual recycling capacity of 400,000 tonnes.
This achievement underscores both companies' commitment to advancing circular economy principles. Achieving 95% recycled content is an important step toward reducing the carbon footprint, while preserving the quality and distinctive appearance of this iconic crème tin.

The updated NIVEA Creme tin has been available in Germany since the beginning of 2026, with distribution planned to expand across Europe and other markets from 2027.
Novelis and Beiersdorf have indicated that they intend to continue exploring ways to increase recycled aluminium content and develop packaging with lower associated emissions.
