External packaging system makes existing nicotine pouch cans child-resistant
Business
Chemular, a regulatory consultancy specialising in reduced-harm tobacco and nicotine products, has launched Safeguard Mark I, a patent-pending child-resistant packaging platform designed for use with existing nicotine pouch cans.
The system has been developed as an external component that can be adapted to different can formats, allowing manufacturers to introduce child-resistant packaging without replacing or redesigning the primary container.

According to Chemular, the approach is intended to help manufacturers meet child-resistant packaging requirements while limiting changes to existing production infrastructure and products that may already be undergoing the US Food and Drug Administration's Premarket Tobacco Product Application (PMTA) process.
Safeguard Mark I features a transparent outer structure designed to retain the visibility of existing branding, labels and scannable UPC barcodes. Chemular said this could allow the system to be introduced with limited or no changes to existing packaging artwork.
Every brand out there is trying to solve the same problem. How do you implement child-resistant packaging without starting over or incurring significant costs? Through our work supporting product development and PMTAs across the industry, we've seen how significant that challenge can be. Safeguard was developed to give manufacturers a fundamentally different option, one that builds on the products and systems they already have in place, saving them time and money.
Jason Carignan, Chief Commercial Officer of Chemular.
The packaging incorporates a spring-based locking mechanism intended to provide child resistance while remaining accessible to adult users. The company said the patent-pending design was developed in response to both regulatory requirements and intellectual property considerations surrounding child-resistant closure technologies.
Chemular is currently working with manufacturers and brands interested in assessing the platform for existing and new nicotine pouch products.
