Steel packaging exceeds EU 2025 recycling rate target
Sustainability
With the recent implementation of a harmonised approach for calculating packaging recycling rates in the EU, APEAL hails this as a significant stride towards equitable standards across all packaging materials in Europe. The previous disparate methods used by EU member states to determine recycling rates created discrepancies, masking challenges associated with multi-material packaging.
The novel methodology, which focuses on the material genuinely recycled at recycling facilities' entrance, marks a pivotal shift towards accuracy and transparency in the European packaging sector.
While some EU member states adopted this methodology last year and more have embraced it this year, a transitional period persists, with eight member states adhering to previous regulations.
APEAL proudly presents figures aligned with the EU's progressive approach, revealing that 78.5% of steel packaging was 'truly recycled' in 2021. This accomplishment surpasses the EU's steel recycling rate target of 70% by 2025, showcasing the effectiveness of the enhanced methodology.
Steve Claus, Secretary General of APEAL, said: The figures affirm that steel remains the most widely recycled sales packaging material in Europe, a testament to its unique properties and the collaborative efforts of stakeholders across the value chain to maintain a 100% closed material loop.
Unlike many other packaging materials, our newly published figures are based on the actual recycling of steel packaging, not merely its collection.
By prioritising actual recycling tonnages over collected or sorted tonnages, APEAL and its partners aim to contribute to a greener, more circular future. This approach fosters sustainability and resource conservation in the packaging industry.
