Paper-based ice cream wrap moves towards commercial rollout
Sustainability
A paper-based wrapping solution designed specifically for ice cream products is undergoing validation ahead of a planned phased commercial rollout later this year.
Developed by Tetra Pak, the Ice Cream Wrap is made with up to 85% paper sourced from FSC-certified forests and other controlled sources. The company says the format has been designed to provide ice cream manufacturers with an additional packaging option while meeting the performance requirements associated with production and the cold chain.

The wrap features a thin, multi-layer structure intended to protect the packaged product while limiting the amount of material required. Its development draws on Tetra Pak’s existing experience in paper-based food packaging and ice cream production equipment.
According to research cited by the company, 24% of consumers globally consider sustainability an important factor when it comes to ice cream packaging, while 16% indicate a preference for paper packaging within the category.
Ice cream is one of the world's most loved food categories, and innovation now extends beyond flavours and formats. Packaging is becoming an increasingly important way for brands to differentiate, attract attention and respond to changing consumer expectations.
Tetra Pak® Ice Cream Wrap gives producers a new way to create a distinctive consumer experience, combining the familiar appearance of paper with the functionality required for ice cream products.

The solution is currently being tested with ice cream manufacturers across Europe, including Swedish producer Triumf Glass. The trials are being used to evaluate its performance under commercial production conditions and gather consumer feedback before wider availability.
Tetra Pak is planning a phased introduction of the Ice Cream Wrap during the fourth quarter of 2026. The initial rollout will take place in Europe, with further markets expected to follow.
