The LEGO Group has officially opened its first dedicated global manufacturing innovation centre, marking a significant investment in the technologies and capabilities that support product development and manufacturing.

Located in Billund, Denmark, the new Kornmarken Campus expands the company's long-standing manufacturing presence in the town where LEGO was founded. Combined with the existing factory, the site now spans around 100,000 m², bringing together engineering, quality and manufacturing teams to develop, test and scale new production technologies while continuing LEGO brick manufacturing.

Around 1,800 employees will be based at the facility, which has been designed to encourage collaboration across manufacturing, engineering and innovation disciplines.

The campus includes a range of specialist facilities, including a Test & Innovation Centre for developing new production processes, moulding technologies and packaging solutions, a Materials Lab focused on researching more sustainable raw materials, an Additive Manufacturing Centre, a Training Academy for future manufacturing specialists and a mould manufacturing facility for new product development.

Kornmarken Campus strengthens the LEGO Group’s foundation for future growth. By bringing all aspects of manufacturing innovation together in one location, we can speed up how new ideas move from concept to reality in our global operations network.

Niels B Christiansen, Chief Executive Officer.

Sustainability has also been a key consideration in the site's design. The 47,000 m² building has been constructed using approximately 22,000 m² of mass timber and incorporates energy-efficient systems, renewable energy, rainwater management and measures intended to support a healthy indoor environment. The LEGO Group is targeting LEED Platinum certification for the campus.

The facility will be partly powered by an existing 4 MW solar park, while construction is also underway on a new 80-100 MW solar installation that the company says will eventually match the total energy consumption of its Billund operations.

Later this year, the campus is also expected to open a Sustainability Play Lab, offering schoolchildren and visitors an opportunity to learn more about the company's work on sustainable materials.

The opening of Kornmarken Campus represents the latest phase in the LEGO Group's continued investment in manufacturing innovation and its global headquarters in Billund.
