Fibre-based tray tackles heat and grease for Circle K Flamin’ Hot chicken wings
Business
ProAmpac has developed a custom fibre-based food tray for Circle K’s Flamin’ Hot Boneless Chicken Wings, launched in partnership with PepsiCo/Frito-Lay.
The packaging was created to address several requirements associated with merchandising hot prepared food, including heat retention, moisture management, grease resistance and product visibility.

Circle K required a format capable of maintaining the condition of the chicken during hot holding while also providing an appropriate presentation within heated display cabinets. ProAmpac subsequently developed the tray around the product’s recipe and portion size.
The packaging manufacturer also worked from PepsiCo’s initial brand design, adapting the pack for production while engineering the structure to help retain heat and moisture for longer. The design also provides greater visibility of the food inside the pack.
According to ProAmpac, the fibre-based tray incorporates enhanced grease resistance to support a cleaner presentation during display and consumption.
The structural design was developed specifically for the Flamin’ Hot Boneless Chicken Wings rather than using an existing standard format, allowing its dimensions and performance characteristics to be tailored to the food product.
The project combines material selection and structural packaging design with requirements specific to foodservice applications, where packaging can be required to withstand heat and grease while maintaining product quality during holding and display.
The launch forms part of Circle K’s collaboration with PepsiCo/Frito-Lay on Flamin’ Hot Boneless Chicken Wings, with ProAmpac providing the packaging element of the project.
