Durable paper-based bags enhances Riverford’s veg box service

Sustainability
Organic veg box company Riverford has introduced a new recyclable paper-based packaging format for its root vegetable range, aimed at enhancing both sustainability and operational performance in its home delivery service.
Developed in collaboration with packaging supplier Parkside, the new solution uses a vertical form fill seal (VFFS) material that is fully kerbside recyclable. It features advanced water-based coatings that provide effective resistance to moisture and grease, helping to maintain product freshness from farm to doorstep.

The material is designed for durability, offering high tensile strength and strong resistance to tearing and bursting — making it ideal for efficient movement through the supply chain.
Visually, the bags incorporate a printed design that mimics the look of kraft paper, combining a natural, rustic appearance with the sharp print quality achievable on coated substrates. This was enabled by Parkside’s flexographic printing and reprographics technology.
By switching from pre-formed 100gsm paper sacks to a 90gsm VFFS-compatible alternative, Riverford has achieved a reduction in material usage, supporting its commitment to reducing resource consumption. The change has also improved packing speeds — increasing from around 25 to 35 packs per minute — resulting in greater operational efficiency and lower energy use.
Matt Mountfield, Head of Procurement at Riverford, said: Working with Parkside on this project has been seamless from start to finish. Their technical knowledge and innovative approach enabled a brand-new paper-based design for our root vegetable packaging, suitable for automated form filling. The result is a design that perfectly meets our sustainability goals, improving efficiency and delivering the quality that our customers expect.
The new pack offers a balance of sustainability, performance and visual appeal, supporting Riverford’s mission to reduce environmental impact across its operations.
