Advancing lower-carbon metal packaging for adhesive products

Pirlo is now supplying tinplate cans made from CO₂-reduced bluemint® packaging steel by thyssenkrupp Rasselstein for use at Henkel Adhesive Technologies. The containers are used for a range of adhesive products for both professional tradespeople and consumers, including the Tangit brand.

By switching to this material, the carbon footprint of the packaging can be reduced by up to 62% compared to conventional tinplate.

This reduction is enabled by the production route of bluemint® steel, which lowers emissions through optimized processes such as the use of specially processed steel scrap in the blast furnace. This approach allows partial substitution of CO₂-intensive raw materials. The resulting emission values are independently verified and certified by DNV and TÜV SÜD.

Proven material with enhanced sustainability profile

Tinplate is already among the most sustainable packaging materials in widespread use. In Europe, more than 80% of tinplate packaging is recycled—more than any other packaging material. The use of CO₂-reduced bluemint® packaging steel further strengthens these environmental benefits.

Practical application

This collaboration highlights how sustainability targets can be translated into concrete industrial solutions.

Pirlo converts the CO₂-reduced steel into high-precision containers designed for demanding adhesive applications. These meet Henkel’s strict requirements in terms of stability, tightness, and compatibility with chemical products.

With its expertise in metal processing, Pirlo enables the use of lower-emission materials in industrial-scale production—delivering reliable, market-ready packaging solutions.
