Java Republic & NPP: Sustainability, packaging innovation & partnership

Java Republic & NPP
Supplier News

Java Republic has been setting the standard for exceptional coffee in Ireland since 1999. From ethically sourcing coffee at origin to roasting in a 100% carbon-neutral facility in Dublin and delivering nationwide, the business covers the full journey from crop to cup.

As a business focused on quality, consistency, and sustainability, packaging plays a critical role in maintaining product freshness while supporting operational efficiency and environmental goals.

For over a decade, NPP has worked closely with Java Republic to support their packaging requirements across their coffee production operation in Dublin.

Packaging that protects freshness

“Packaging is a really important part of the business here at Java Republic,” explains Managing Director Jeffrey Long. “It seals in the freshness and the quality of the product from the outset, but also it is very much the first thing that a customer sees and the last thing that they remember.”

Freshly roasted coffee naturally releases carbon dioxide, making effective packaging essential to preserving flavour and freshness. “Our recyclable packaging provided by NPP includes a patented degassing valve that allows carbon dioxide to escape while preventing oxygen from entering the bag, helping to keep the coffee fresher for longer,” says Quality and Sustainability Manager Jolanta Turowska.

Alongside the coffee films, NPP also supply:

  • Printed corrugated boxes
  • Pallet wrap
  • Eco bubble wrap
  • Packaging machinery

Sustainability through continuous improvement

Sustainability has been core to Java Republic’s operations from day one, from roasting right through to the final product.

Working collaboratively, both companies have implemented several improvements designed to reduce waste and improve recyclability across the operation, including:

  • Fully recyclable coffee films
  • 50% reduction in pallet wrap consumption
  • Eco bubble wrap containing 30% recycled material
  • Fully recyclable corrugated packaging solutions

“Having a partner that is aligned with our environmental values only elevates the partnership,” Turowska explains. “Together we can create a product that is reliable, reduces waste, and can adapt very easily to customer demands while still meeting environmental needs.”

The focus has always been on improving sustainability without compromising efficiency or product quality.

A relationship built on trust

For NPP Director Eoin McDonagh, the success of the relationship comes down to trust.

“A successful partnership is built on trust. This is fundamental to any collaboration.”

Over the years, both teams have worked closely to introduce new packaging innovations, support production requirements, and ensure supply keeps pace with demand.

NPP’s role extends beyond supplying packaging materials. By supporting both packaging systems and consumables, the company works closely with Java Republic to ensure solutions perform efficiently within a fast-moving production environment.

“We look after all their packaging requirements,” McDonagh says, “and we let Java Republic do what they do best.”

Looking ahead

Working closely with trusted partners like NPP allows Java Republic to continuously review packaging systems, improve efficiencies, and stay ahead of future operational and environmental requirements.

As Jeffrey Long puts it: “Working with the team at NPP is really important to us. They bring expertise and knowledge in reviewing our systems and packaging requirements to make sure that we are ahead of the curve when it comes to the future of our business.”
