Exchange for Change has published the approved Regulatory Requirements governing the use of the Deposit Return Scheme (DRS) logo for drinks containers across England, Scotland and Northern Ireland.

The guidance provides drinks producers with detailed direction on how the DRS logo must be applied to packaging. From 1 October 2027, use of the logo in accordance with the published requirements will be mandatory for producers seeking to comply with UK DRS regulations.

The scheme logo is intended to help consumers identify which drinks containers are included in the deposit return scheme when it becomes operational. Designed as a simple and distinctive mark, it is intended to provide consistent recognition across packaging, return points and scheme-related communications.

According to the published requirements, the logo must appear clearly on all in-scope drinks containers, with guidance provided on acceptable on-pack orientations. The document also outlines minimum and maximum size parameters, spacing rules, approved colour formats and production considerations, as well as the process that would apply should the logo ever be withdrawn or replaced.

The guidance confirms that producers may choose to use the DRS logo alongside existing on-pack recycling labels, or as a replacement, depending on their own labelling approach. To support implementation, technical artwork files have been made available in a range of formats suitable for both print and digital applications.

The scheme logo is visual shorthand for how the deposit return scheme works. From October next year, people will see this icon on every in-scope bottle and can across England, Scotland and Northern Ireland. The consistency of the DRS logo matters, as it will build recognition and help to drive behaviour change in recycling.

Publishing the approved Regulatory Requirements gives drinks producers the clarity they need to plan artwork cycles and packaging updates with confidence. We’re focused on giving industry time, certainty and support as we move towards launch.

Russell Davies, CEO of Exchange for Change.
