PackUK has published RAM 2027, the latest version of its Recyclability Assessment Methodology (RAM), providing updated guidance for producers assessing the recyclability of household packaging under the UK's Extended Producer Responsibility for packaging (pEPR) scheme.

The methodology will apply to household packaging placed on the market during 2027 and will be used by producers to determine whether packaging is classified as red, amber or green. These ratings will influence modulated pEPR fees and are intended to encourage the design of more recyclable packaging.

According to PackUK, RAM 2027 builds on version 1.1, published in April 2025, following consultation with producers, trade associations and technical specialists. The latest update introduces changes to material rules, definitions, assessment guidance and the overall structure of the methodology, with the aim of improving clarity, consistency and ease of use.

PackUK said the revised framework is also intended to better reflect real-world recycling outcomes by strengthening the link between recyclability assessments and the way packaging is collected, sorted and recycled in practice.

The organisation believes the updated methodology will support producers in making more informed packaging design decisions while contributing to wider progress towards a more circular packaging system.

PackUK also noted that the recently appointed UK Packaging PRO will play an increasing role in the future development of the methodology and supporting guidance for producers.

The organisation has emphasised that RAM 2027 applies only to packaging supplied during 2027 and does not affect reporting requirements for 2025 or 2026. Producers should therefore continue using RAM version 1.1 for current reporting periods while familiarising themselves with the new methodology ahead of next year's reporting cycle.

Under the current timetable, RAM version 1.1 remains applicable for packaging supplied between 1 January and 31 December 2026, with reporting deadlines of 1 October 2026 for the first half of the year and 1 April 2027 for the second half. RAM 2027 will apply to packaging supplied from 1 January to 31 December 2027, with reporting deadlines of 1 October 2027 and 1 April 2028.

PackUK said the methodology will continue to be reviewed and updated annually under the update cycle set out in the RAM Roadmap, providing producers with greater visibility of future changes while supporting ongoing collaboration across the packaging value chain.
