Oreo maker sues Aldi over 'copycat' packaging claims
Business
Mondelez International, the global snack manufacturer behind Oreo, has filed a lawsuit against Aldi, alleging that the retailer’s private-label packaging too closely resembles that of its well-known branded products.
The legal complaint, filed in the United States, claims that Aldi's own-brand biscuits and crackers imitate the packaging design of products such as Oreo, Chips Ahoy, Ritz, and Wheat Thins. Mondelez argues that the visual similarities are likely to mislead consumers and potentially harm its brand reputation.

The case highlights a broader trend within the retail sector, where supermarket chains often sell their own-label alternatives alongside branded goods. Aldi, known for its focus on affordability, primarily stocks products under its own branding.
According to Mondelez, efforts were made to contact Aldi about the similarities in packaging design. While some items were reportedly discontinued or updated, the company claims other allegedly infringing products remain on sale.
Mondelez is seeking a court order to prevent Aldi from continuing to sell any packaging it believes violates trademark protections, in addition to pursuing financial compensation.
