New paper bags plant opens in Pennsylvania to support e Commerce packaging demand

Mondi has officially opened its new packaging production facility in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, further expanding its manufacturing capabilities in the United States to better support customers with reliable, high-quality paper based packaging solutions across key end markets.

The new state of the art plant produces a wide range of paper bags for customers in the eCommerce, food, feed, building materials and chemicals sectors. The facility brings together production previously located at Mondi’s Wellsburg, West Virginia and Oakdale, Pennsylvania sites, while adding advanced, highly automated technology to enhance efficiency, quality and customer service.

The Pittsburgh plant significantly expands Mondi’s production capacity in the US, with a particular focus on the fast-growing eCommerce sector, including innovative paper mailer bags. Highly automated production lines and advanced printing capabilities are designed to meet key eCommerce customer requirements such as scalable volumes, short lead times and consistent quality, enabling Mondi to respond quickly to changing demand and ensure reliable supply. After completing the ramp up phase, the plant is expected to reach an annual capacity of 300 million paper bags.

The opening of our new Pittsburgh plant marks an important milestone for our paper bags business in North America. By bringing production together in a modern facility, we are strengthening our ability to support customers with reliable, high quality paper bag solutions while responding more effectively to evolving customer needs across growing end markets.

Demand in eCommerce is increasingly shaped by high‑volume, fast‑moving applications that require flexibility, short lead times and consistent performance. The new Pittsburgh plant allows us to better align our sustainable paper‑based eCommerce portfolio with these specific customer requirements. The investment underlines Mondi’s long term commitment to the US market and to sustainable growth within its eCommerce business.

By the end of this year, approximately 170 people are expected to work at the site, combining operational, technical and customer facing expertise to ensure dependable service for customers across the region.

Located in Pennsylvania, the Pittsburgh plant benefits from strong infrastructure and proximity to key customers and logistics networks, supporting efficient service and responsiveness.
