FDA extends comment period for proposed front-of-pack nutrition labelling rule
Business
The United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has announced a 60-day extension to the comment period for its proposed rule concerning front-of-package (FOP) nutrition labelling. Stakeholders now have until 15 July 2025 to submit feedback. The decision follows multiple requests for additional time to provide comments. Submissions should be made via Regulations.gov, referencing docket number FDA-2024-N-2910.
The proposed regulation would mandate a new FOP nutrition label on most packaged food products, aimed at helping consumers quickly understand how a particular item fits into a healthy diet. This new "Nutrition Info" box is intended to complement the existing Nutrition Facts label found on food packaging in the United States.

The FOP label would provide a simplified overview of a product’s levels of saturated fat, sodium, and added sugars, classifying each as “Low”, “Med”, or “High”. These three nutrients are highlighted in federal dietary guidelines as those which should be limited to promote a nutrient-dense diet within appropriate calorie intake.
Although calorie content would not be a required element in the Nutrition Info box, manufacturers would be allowed to voluntarily display calorie information on the front of packaging, in accordance with current FDA regulations.
The FDA believes this approach could make it easier for consumers to compare similar products and select options with more favourable nutrient profiles. For instance, when comparing types of yoghurt, consumers might use the label to identify options with lower added sugar content.
Globally, front-of-pack nutrition labelling has gained widespread adoption. The FDA sees the potential for a national scheme in the U.S. to become as recognisable and influential as the current Nutrition Facts label.
