SPAR Netherlands launches deposit system trial at university stores

SPAR Netherlands, in collaboration with Statiegeld Nederland, has introduced a pilot deposit system called "Statieheld" at three university-based SPAR stores. These stores, located at Hogeschool Utrecht, TU Eindhoven, and Erasmus University in Rotterdam, are part of an effort to promote sustainable recycling practices among students.

The Statieheld system uses reverse vending machines that allow students to recycle deposit bottles and cans efficiently. The name "Statieheld" (deposit hero) is a play on the Dutch word "statiegeld," meaning deposit money. The machines aim to offer a convenient and environmentally friendly way for students to participate in recycling efforts.

Building on the success of earlier implementations at two SPAR supermarkets, this pilot expands to include three university stores and the SPAR Supermarket on Nieuwe Doelenstraat in Amsterdam. SPAR Netherlands views this initiative as part of its broader commitment to sustainable business practices.

The deposit machines are designed to be user-friendly, scanning items quickly and allowing customers to receive their deposits through the payment app Tikkie. This feature aligns with the convenience-driven habits of Generation Z. Additionally, users can choose to donate their deposit to a charity.

The vending machines are provided as a service, allowing SPAR to offer efficient recycling solutions without the need for direct ownership or maintenance. Over the next six months, the pilot will be assessed for its impact on customer satisfaction and operational efficiency, with the potential for further expansion based on the results.
